Rehabilitation Through Employment

Aasha's main focus is on rehabilitation by providing gainful employment for persons with mental health issues. The Aasha Employment Project which is in its 10th year has been a platform through which many individuals who came to Aasha with mental health issues are leading productive and functional lives.

Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Radha Shankar, in 2002 Abilis Foundation Finland sanctioned funds to float the Aasha Employment Project and from then on there has been no looking back. A brainchild of Ratna Chibber founding member and current president of Aasha, she used her experience as an entrepreneur to start retail shops that were run by persons with mental illness. In 2003 Aasha's first General and Stationery shop was launched. Residents are engaged in rotational shifts and paid a remuneration for their work hours at the shops. A supervisor is present is to provide assistance if required. The Aasha Employment project has been instrumental in leading many individuals with mental illness to regain their foothold in the society through engagement with the community which in turn increases in self esteem and helps them to become functional and productive individuals in the community.

Over the years many individuals with mental illness have worked in Aasha employment units and moved on to other employment options. This has been one of Aasha Employment Projects' main objective – rehabilitating people with mental illness by engaging them in employment and guiding them in a supportive, sheltered atmosphere and preparing them to move on to a competitive atmosphere. There is a huge sense of achievement once an individual moves on a external competitive work environment since rehabilitation and reintegration of persons with mental health issues are what we strive for.
